BC NSDAR Honors Veterans on Memorial Day

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” This verse from the book of John adorned the front of the program for the Butler County NDSAR Memorial Day event, held on Monday on the Butler County Courthouse lawn. It was a fitting sentiment as the speakers at the days’ event all included acknowledgement and gratitude for the sacrifice of those men and women that have served or are currently serving in the US Military.

The program was emceed by Gail Gaddie, of the Butler County Chapter of the NSDAR. The General Richard Butler Chapter of the SAR presented colors and the pledge of allegiance was led by a member of the Green River Chapter of the CAR.

The program featured keynote speaker, Major Jim Wright, USMC (ret). Major Wright gave a poignant speech reminding attendees of the bravery and selflessness of all those who have served in the history of the United States. He challenged the audience to not, “...take their sacrifice for granted. Make the most of every opportunity you have,” and that “their legacy lives through us.”

For his military service, Major Wright was honored with a handmade quilt. It was presented by Darlene Scott of the BC Piecemakers.

All Veterans in attendance were recognized prior to the laying of a wreath at the monument honoring Butler Countians killed as a result of war in the Spanish-American War, World Wars One and Two, the Korean War and the War in Vietnam.  Don Elmore played Taps during this moving moment of remembrance.
