Cigarettes, drugs, and even alcohol can be addicting.  The user is often unaware of the developing addiction until it is too late, and more often than not, once someone uses an addictive substance, it won’t be their last time.  Do you know the stages of addiction?  The first stage is “experimental use”.  This includes first time use, the person may or may not use it again.  The second stage is “pattern use”.  During this stage, the body starts to develop a tolerance to the substance.  The third stage is “problem use”.  The substance becomes the primary focus and the user may begin to experience withdrawal symptoms.  The fourth stage is “addiction”.  The use of the substance now surpasses everything else, no matter the negative consequences.
