BC Drug Free: Drinking and Social Distancing

In this time of social distancing and staying home, your teen probably has more time on their hands than usual.  Could this lead to drinking alcohol?  Most definitely.  Teens try alcohol for a variety of reasons, such as boredom, stress, peer pressure, or because they think it gives them some kind of independence.  Believe it or not, the average age for a first drink is 14.  Teen brains are more vulnerable to alcohol because it can alter brain development, and research shows that the teen brain does not fully develop until age 25.  Here are some helpful tips to encourage a healthy lifestyle free of alcohol for your teen:

•Be informed

•Be clear that you do not approve of underage drinking

•Model a healthy lifestyle

•Find opportunities to discuss the dangers of alcohol
