What are the dangers of smoking while pregnant? Smoking while pregnant can cause serious problems. Babies can be born prematurely (smoking slows your baby’s growth), can have birth defects such as cleft lip or cleft palate, or even die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Even just as important, babies who are exposed to cigarette smoke after birth (secondhand smoke) have a higher risk for SIDS as well.
