Baseball: Butler County 1 Trinity 5
On Monday night, the Bears traveled to Grayson County for a district tournament matchup with Whitesville Trinity. The Bears had swept the regular season meetings with Trinity and where in search of a trip to the district championship against Grayson County. Blake Graham took the mound for the Bears looking to pick up the wing. Trinity, however, had other ideas. Trinity jumped on the Bears for two quick runs in the first inning, taking advantage of two errors by the Bears. Graham battled back and picked up a key strikeout to escape further damage.
The Bear bats came alive in the 3rd inning with one out as Lake Cameron, Eddie Phelps and Blake Graham got consecutive hits to load the bases. But Trinity’s ace, Drew Mills, got Clark Parker to pop out and Rex Henderson to ground out to escape the inning still leading 2-0. The Bear bats also tried to get it going again in the 4th inning loading the bases with a leadoff single by Caleb Hunt, a walk by Trevor Parker and a misplayed bunt by Cody Casteel. However, they failed to score again as they recorded the out at the plate on a force out on a suicide bunt by Brandon Jones and Trinity recorded a double play on another failed suicide attempt by Lake Cameron, throwing out both Trevor Parker and Cody Casteel on the base paths.
Trinity busted it open in the top of the 5th scoring three more unearned runs to go up 5-0 on two more Bear costly defensive miscues. Graham left the mound after 5 innings allowing zero earned runs. He was replaced by Caleb Hunt.
The Bears fought back in the bottom of the 6th to score one run on a base hit to center by Brandon Jones. However, they stranded two more men on base leaving the score 5-1 after 6.
Caleb Hunt did a good job holding Trinity in the 7th in hopes of a Bear comeback in the bottom of the inning. But it wasn’t to be as the Bears stranded two men on and lost the game by a final score of 5-1.
The Bears conclude their season with a 12-25 record. Also, the Bears will say farewell to seniors Caleb Hunt and Clark Parker who both exhibited a lot of hard work and determination in their lengthy baseball careers at Butler County.
