BASEBALL: Bears wrap-up regular season play

The BCHS baseball team finished their last week in regular season play with three varsity games and one JV game.  On Tuesday night they suffered a defeat at Muhlenberg 4-0, lost at Logan County on Thursday 6-1, and dropped one against Allen-County 9-1 on Saturday.  In JV action, the Bears lost their last JV game of the season to Muhlenberg 9-5, moving them to a 6-6 record on the year.

Steven White made his sixth start on the mound this season Tuesday night against Muhlenberg.  He came out throwing very well, only giving up 2 hits in his 5 1/3 innings pitched.  Despite only recording 2 hits, Muhlenberg was still able to post 4 runs off of 6 walks, 2 hit batters, and 2 errors.  Senior Cole Tynes came into relieve White with 1 out in the sixth inning.  Tynes only threw 4 pitches before getting a double play to end the inning.

The Bears offense was unable to give White any support, getting shut out on the night.  BCHS had runners in scoring position each of the first 5 innings of the game, but were unable to collect any RBI’s.  The offense for the Bears posted 5 hits on the night, all singles.  White helped himself at the plate, going 1-3. The final score was Muhlenberg 4, BCHS 0.

In JV action following the varsity contest, the bats for BCHS came out hot early on.  The Bears jumped out to a quick lead, scoring 5 runs.  Brandon Jones led the way pitching for the Bears.  After Jones got into trouble late in the game, sophomore Clark Parker came in to relieve Jones.  Muhlenberg broke loose, however, and put up 9 runs, giving them the 9-5 victory.

On Thursday BCHS traveled to Logan County to take on the Cougars to makeup a game that was rescheduled due to heavy rains on Monday.  The Bears came out swinging on Thursday night, putting up 7 hits.  Dillon White and Keston Flener both had 2 hits.  Despite the improved hitting performance, BCHS was still only able to put up 1 run, leaving runners stranded with the bases loaded twice.

Caleb Hunt was the starting pitcher for the Bears.  Hunt lasted 4 innings giving up 3 earned runs, 9 hits, and struck out 3 Cougar hitters.  Hunt was relieved by Keston Flener who allowed 1 earned run off 1 hit in his 2 innings of work.  In the end, the Cougars pulled out the 6-1 victory.

On Saturday the Bears traveled to the Bowling Green Ballpark to take on the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots in the home stadium of the Bowling Green Hot Rods.  This marked the first time BCHS has ever played in the Hot Rods' stadium and the third time the Bears and Patriots clashed this year.

Cole Tynes

Senior Cole Tynes made his second start of the season pitching for the Bears.  The last time Tynes started was against Greenwood on April 16.  Tynes still appeared sharp on the mound, only allowing one earned run to cross the plate in 3 1/3 innings of work.  Tynes was then relieved by Keston Flener and Steven White.  The game was tight for the first 5 innings until Allen County broke loose in the sixth scoring 7 runs to pull ahead at 9-1.

Senior Dillen White continued to stay hot at the plate, collecting 3 of the Bears 5 hits.  Junior Carrington Harpe drove in the lone run with an RBI single to right field.  Harpe was 1-3 on the day.  The Bears were unable to string enough hits together in the 7th and suffered a defeat of 9-1.

The Bears will be back in action at home on Tuesday night at 5:30 against Edmonson County in the 12th District tournament.  The Bears are hosting district for the first time at their new baseball complex.  The winner of the BCHS/Edmonson came will take on the winner of Grayson/Whitesville on Tuesday night at 6:30 in the championship game.  The Bears are 1-1 against Edmonson this season.
