Baseball: Bears drop district game to Grayson County on walkoff

LEITCHFIELD - Butler County suffered heartbreak on the road on Monday as host Grayson County used a walkoff single to win 5-4 in a 12th District baseball game.
With the loss, Butler County dropped to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the 12th District.
Grayson County improved to 7-16 overall and 4-1 in the district with the win.
The game was tied 4-4 with Grayson County batting in the bottom half of the seventh inning when Cain Smith singled on a 1-0 count to score the game-winning run.
Grayson County pitcher Braxton Hodges earned the win. Hodges surrendered four runs on six hits over six innings, striking out nine.
Another Grayson County hurler, Alex Scott, threw one inning in relief for the Cougars. Scott recorded the last three outs to earn the save.
Butler County pitcher Warren Cameron suffered the loss. Cameron allowed one hit and zero runs over one-third of an inning, striking out one and walking zero.
Parker Rice started on the mound for the Bears. Rice worked six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out four.
Butler County scored first, pushing across one run in the top half of the second inning. However, Grayson County answered, plating a run of its own in the bottom half of the third inning to pull even.
Visiting Butler County managed to move back ahead in the top half of the fourth inning, scoring one run to take a 2-1 lead.
Adding to its advantage, Butler County crossed home plate with two more runs in the top half of the fifth inning to lead 4-1.
But Grayson County wouldn't go away. The Cougars plated three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to tie the game 4-4.
Smith's late-game heroics at the plate in the bottom half of the seventh inning allowed Grayson County to notch the all-important district win.
Noah Bullock led Grayson County's offensive attack, finishing 4-for-4. Aiding the Cougars' offensive onslaught, Smith and Hodges drove in two runs apiece in the hard-fought win.
Grayson County managed to outhit the Bears 8-6.
Helping his pitching cause at the plate, Rice went 3-for-3 to lead the Butler County offensive effort. Another Butler County batter, Hunter McKee, drove in two of the Bears' four runs. McKee, Gage Ward and Carter Graham chipped in one hit apiece for Butler County in the short effort.
Each 12th District baseball squad committed one error.
Both Butler County and Grayson County will compete in the 12th District Baseball Tournament later in the month.
