Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain/Back When

Saturday night while watching the NASCAR race, I saw a Chevy truck commercial that sparked the subject of this piece.  This little boy was playing with his toy truck, as little boys do, and he hears the sound of an engine nearing.  His dad was coming home from work in his Chevy. The truck is a grown replica of the boy’s toy.  I believe the tagline is “Chevy Runs Deep”. That certainly fit this scenario.
After viewing this moving spot, a few thoughts entered my mind.  The one I kept coming back to is my subject today: Remember that feeling of when you were a kid? Where does it go and when did it leave? Perhaps most important, can we get it back?
It was a simpler time when I was a kid.  I went to school, have class until lunch.  We ate and after a while, if the weather permitted, we went outside and played. I distinctly recall playing trucks with B.J. and Gabe Inglis.  Those were some good times.  You did a little more work and went home where it was likely that a snack was waiting.
I would always get dropped off at my great grandmother’s house, as my mom was still teaching at BCHS. I went in and it was afternoon television and a snack.  That was the life! Mom would come home and pick me up (or my sister if Mom worked late or she had Master’s classes). I would help carry in groceries or whatever else was brought home.  I guess that’s where my drive originated.  Everybody pitched in.  It was then dinner, homework, etc.
Where does the feeling of being a kid disappear? Well, we grow up and get responsibilities of our own.  It leaves around middle school to freshman year of high school, whether you realize it or not.  Can we get it back? Let’s just say that times change, and we change with the times.
Yes, a Chevy truck commercial spawned all those memories.  Funny the way that works sometimes.
