Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain
September Song- There are a lot of songs about the month of September. It’s probably the most popular month to sing about. At least it’s the most frequented one in song titles. The earliest one I discovered was made most popular by The Happenings in 1966, called “See You In September”. The song was written by Sid Wayne and Sherman Edwards. It was first recorded by the Pittsburgh vocal group The Tempos. That original version peaked at #3 in 1966.
Twelve years later, Earth, Wind and Fire released their own September song. “September”, from the album The Best of Earth, Wind and Fire, was released on November 18, 1978. Written by Maurice White, Al McKay and Allee Willis, the song reached #1 on the U.S. R&B chart, #8 on the Billboard Hot 100and #3 on the UK singles charts.
There was an actual song called “September Song”. The song has been released by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Willie Nelson. It’s also been recorded by Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. It’s a beautiful song. I encourage you to look it up: Bing, Spotify, iTunes, whatever you use.
The most recent song that I remember is Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”. That song was, of course, one of the many songs that were written and recorded in response to the attacks on September 11, 2001. Even though it doesn’t have September in the title, I’ll add Alan Jackson’s biggest hit “Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning”.
There were some September songs with which I wasn’t so familiar. They are: “September” by the Shins, “September Gurls” by Big Star and “September Sun” by Type O Negative.
My favorite is, hands down, the Earth, Wind and Fire song “September”. What’s yours?
