Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain
Conversation: The Text Generation-Which do you prefer: texting or calling? I posed this question to Facebook and got some surprising results. Well, it might be surprising if you don’t take into account that the majority of my Facebook friends are my age, very close to my age, or a bit older.
I got a 7-3 Facebook vote of texting over calling. I actually got 12 Facebook responses. The final were texting/email. I guess that would make the count 9-3, wouldn’t it? Does that surprise you? One argument in favor of calling may be that texting is impersonal. What I found is that texting is easier. People don’t like to talk on the phone. That’s just the truth.
“Texting is an introvert’s best friend. Before you call, ask yourself “can I text this”? That’s what my best friend says. I tend to agree. In basically all business situations, the good old-fashioned phone call is vital, at least when it gets down to winning time, as it were.
In the texting vs calling debate, there are obviously a few factors to take into account. If you’re an introvert, chances are you’re primarily texting. If you’re running low on time, you’re texting. Calling is basically if you have extended time to talk. Remember the days of no cell phones, meaning no texting? I do. I like both but texting saves time. That’s why everybody’s doing it these days. Just don’t walk into a light pole!
