A few days ago, a friend of mine posted a meme (picture with words, for the un-initiated), about flirting ie “How normal people flirt (hey sexy:) and how I flirt( if you were a tree, you’d be a good tree). 
That made me wonder, and I even commented this on her photo, would you rather be called sexy or beautiful? Do you find sexy demeaning, like you’re just a piece of meat? I took to social media to get various opinions on this subject.
One comment that got the most agreement was that it depended on whether she was dating the guy.  If so, it’s fine.  If not, you better steer clear.  “Hey sexy” could be seen as demeaning as when a girl calls a guy with whom she’s not familiar “sweetie”. 
Beautiful, on the other hand, is an acceptable compliment all around.  One friend said she’s fine with either, that it only irritates her when a guy whistles at her.  I, for one, am not a whistler. Never-mind that it’s because I don’t whistle correctly.  It’s just because
I don’t want to.  I see it as crass to whistle at a woman.  It’s not at all gentlemanly, or manly at all.
Another friend said that it’s so overused these days that it’s hard to know if people really mean it.  Do you hear that, guys? “Hey sexy” is overused.  Food for thought.  Think about it like this, guys: reverse the roles.  Would you rather be looked at as a piece of meat? That’s why that Magic Mike garbage irks me.  But hey, it’s just a movie. 
I always go to my best friend for a comment.  She says: It’s interesting.  When I was younger I was so insecure and didn’t like myself”.  She said sexy would’ve been fine for her at that time in her life.  “But then I grew up a little and learned to like myself a little.  Suddenly, compliments from men didn’t mean anything from strangers.  I appreciate it from people I care about.  Some girls crave that.  I used to.  Now I’m more interested in what people think of my heart and intelligence”. 
You hear that, guys? Turns out, what a person thinks of a woman’s heart is more important than outward appearance.  See, crass does not attract a woman’s attention.  Be nice and polite.  I know “nice guys finish last”. Well, in my opinion, nice guys finish best.  In the sexy vs beautiful debate, to each their own, I suppose.  That friend who sparked this column, she’s good with beautiful or sexy.  If you’re dead-set on going with sexy, you probably ought to be dating the woman.  You’re really taking your chances on sexy.  Beautiful works most every time.
