Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

MSN has compiled their list of 100 favorite films of all time.  Anytime a list like this is compiled, there will be plenty of opinions. I won’t go through the whole list, as that would take a while.  I will, however, provide a link so you can see the list in its entirety. #100 on this list was 1974’s Young Frankenstein.  I love to laugh, so I was interested to see where the comedies ranked.  The Leslie Neilson classic “Airplane!” was ranked at #16. This is truly one of the funniest franchises of all time.  Did you know that the movie Ted paid tribute to the disco scene in Airplane!?
A spot below it at #17 is Jaws.  I bet some are still afraid to go in the water after seeing those movies! The 1952 classic Singin’ In The Rain ranks at #19.  Cult classic the Breakfast Club clocks in below it at #21.  Look at the songs and the stars that arose from that flick.  The tv show Psych regularly pays tribute to Breakfast Club and other films of that era.  Breakfast Club ranks above, get ready to be outraged, the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night! Don’t send your hate mail to me, Beatles fans.  I didn’t compile the list.  It’s said that Hard Day’s Night anticipated Curt Cobain’s ambivalence about the corporate3 co-opting of youth culture by 30 years and pointed the way for the free-form absurdist comedy of Monty Python that would come a half decade later.
Iconic flick The Princess Bride, for which I’ll always remember Wallace Shawn and the late, great Andre Roussimoff (better known as Andre the Giant) comes in at #31.  Amazingly, this is six spots ahead of Casablanca.  The Godfather is ranked 45th. At least it’s in the top half of the 100.   Another one I had a problem with was the Big Lebowski being ranked above Forest Gump. A favorite of mine, because it was heavy on music, is Grease.  It was saddled with the #65 spot.  I’d like to have seen that one ranked higher.
The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring was at the #3 spot, one spot ahead of the classic It’s A Wonderful Life.  I have a BIG problem with that decision.  I guess there are more LOTR fans working for msn.  They redeem themselves, however, with their top pick.  (In my best Casey Kasem voice) taking home the top spot on msn’s 100 favorite movies is the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.
I have no qualms with their #1.  It’s numbers 2-100 with which I take issue.  Some should be ranked higher.  Some ranked lower.  Some I was thinking, “How’d that one get there”? See what you think. Here is the link: http://t.entertainment.msn.com/msn-entertainments-100-favorite-films-1
