Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Remember the old days when, if there was something you were going to order, you had to do it over the phone? I recall years ago spending an entire Saturday morning (9-12) on the phone to order concert tickets.  There were two particular times where my dialing fingers were working overtime: purchasing Garth Brooks and George Strait tickets.  Keep in mind, this was the ‘90’s-the height of Garth and George’s popularity. Although, Garth’s Nashville Flood benefit show was crazy as well, but I digress.
I put this issue out to facebook.  Ordering online is perfect these days for, for one, single mothers. One single mother told me “I love online shopping! As a single mother of a special needs child, it makes my life so much easier”.  She continued, adding she’d done all her Christmas shopping online for years.  She also said she finds better deals online and rarely pays a dime extra for shipping.
I, too, have ordered quite a few gifts online over the years. It’s just easier.  It’s a time saver.  If there’s just too much going on and you can’t get away, hop online and find what you’re looking for in mere moments.  For people who aren’t keen on talking over the phone and dealing with operators, store clerks, etc., online is a perfect outlet.  Searching for vehicles, farm equipment, clothes or rare memorabilia? Online is the way to go.  Even if you don’t purchase online, you can call and ask if they have the item in stock, if you’re close enough to go purchase in person.
I wouldn’t say that shopping online has completely replaced buying in a store.  In the case I just mentioned in the previous sentence, you can use those tools together.  You see something online and call the store to see if they have it in stock.  They do, so you go and purchase in store.  Online specialty stores can have some things that others won’t.  So you’re good there also.  As you can see, online hasn’t quite replaced going to a store.  I personally don’t think it will, at least no time in the near future.
