Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain
Happy New Year! In my first column of 2015(we’ll see if I remember to write -15 on my checks), I will talk about an article I read on the internet yesterday. A friend on Facebook shared WFIE 14 Evansville’s story about an Oklahoma City Senator who wants to make it illegal for residents to wear clothing that covers their face, including hooded sweatshirts.
There are already laws in Oklahoma preventing hoodies during a crime. Not exactly sure how you’d prevent hoodies during a crime. Twenty one OS 13.01 has always made it a crime to wear a hoodie or some sort of disguise during a criminal offense. Now, a proposal for an amendment to that law could make it illegal to hide your identity in public. The fine for the fashion crime is $500.
Senator Don Barrington authored the amendment, saying they want to help victims of robberies. Some think they just want to make Oklahoma safer; others think this won’t work at all.
One friend left this comment under my post: “I love hoodies. Nothing more warm and cozy this time of year”. She went onto say she’d wear hoodies each day of the week if she had enough of them. You want to know a secret? If I looked hard enough around here, I bet I do have enough to wear every day of the week. Let’s see: 1 WKU, 3 UK, 1 Old Navy. Yes, I indeed have enough for a 5 day week.
Another said “just what this country need: more government regulations. My feeling on the matter is this: I would think there are more important things to worry about than people wearing hoodies. If a person is going to commit a crime, I’d say it’s in their mind already, no matter what they choose to wear when they do the deed. I really hope this bogus law doesn’t make its way to Kentucky.
