Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Several months ago, I had my picture taken for our church yearbook-at least I think that’s what it was supposed to be.  If you don’t know, I do not like having my picture taken.  One major problem is that I have difficulty keeping my eyes open.  No, not as in I go to sleep.  I blink.  Anyone who has attempted to take my picture, let alone succeeded, will tell you that it took several snaps.  Being a photographer, I understand why you’d want to take multiple pictures.  You want options.  Of course, multiple shots of a person sometimes (always in my case) means eyes were shut in picture #1.
Why do I do it? I’m sure the fact that I do it annoys some photographers, even if they won’t admit it.  I know the flash is coming.  Yes, I know it’s just a flash of light.  I don’t know why I do it.  It’s a family thing.  And I know that I’m not the only person.  I also think that, the older you get, the less you like your picture being taken.
Back to the church pictures; the photographer was a professional obviously, so he didn’t mind much.  At least that’s what you say, right? It’s not like they’re going to say “no, I’m really upset! Sit still or else!” First of all, that would be terribly unprofessional; aside from the fact that it would be mean.  And no one is going to go back to a mean or impatient photographer.  So, it took a few shots for the photographer to get my picture, especially the posed ones.
It’s funny; I’ve always loved photography, professional or recreational.  But once you put me in front of the camera, I feel as awkward as a high school boy asking a girl to prom.  And don’t get me started on those prom pictures!
That’s why there aren’t many pictures of me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram or wherever.  It’s even like pulling teeth for me to take a new picture for beechree.  So, that’s my dirty little (not so) secret: I do not like having my picture taken.  I never have and probably never will.  And I’ll probably have my eyes closed in the ones that are taken.  What about you? Do you mind having your picture taken?

Hello.  My name is Andy Sullivan.  I received my bachelor’s degree in business from Mid-Continent University in June 2009.  I began writing for beechtree in July 2009.  I enjoy writing, photography, watching basketball and football, and playing guitar.  I also write a blog that encompasses sports and entertainment, called Sports and More, at http://andyuk79.tumblr.com If you have any comments, please leave them in the space below.  Thanks for reading!
