Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Now and then, I’ll get some interesting tidbits from SiriusXM. Here is the latest batch. Did you know that Carly Simon began her career in the 1960’s as part of The Simon Sisters. This folk duo consisted of Carly and her sister Lucy. They released 3 albums between 1964-1969 before Lucy left and got married. Lucy had a minor solo career and released 2 albums in the ‘70’s before finding greater success writing music for Broadway lay; she received a Tony award nomination for her music on The Secret Garden in 1991.

Beginning in 1971, Carly began a very successful solo career, releasing over 23 studio albums and produced multiple Top 40 hits across the U.S. Billboard charts, as well as winning two Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, among other competitive and honorary accolades.

The Monkees were a decorated ‘60’s group with several albums, hits and a smash tv show. The last thing they did as a group was a movie called Head. They wanted to do a sequel so they could say “from the folks that gave you Head”. By the way, the director of the movie is someone you might’ve heard of: this 1968 satirical musical adventure film was written and produced by Bob Rafelson and……Jack Nicholson. Here are a few bits of information that came from the AXS TV show Vinyl Obsession.ZZ Top’s Fandango was their 4 th album. Released in 1975, it was a half-live, half-studio album. It featured live cuts of “Backdoor Medley” and “Jailhouse Rock”. The band’s breakthrough was their 3 rd album, Tres Hombres, released in 1973. The album was certified Gold.

Curtis Mayfield’s 1971 album Curtis Live is a compilation of his first set of live gigs as a solo artist after leaving The Impressions. You ever wonder what album ended the Beatles’ Abbey Road album at #1? That would be Led Zeppelin II. The album sold 3 million copies in 6 months. (AXS Vinyl Obsession)

This last bit of information is from ‘60’s Gold on SiriusXM: Creedence Clearwater Revival never had a Billboard #1 hit in the United States. Five of their singles peaked at #2. They have the dubious distinction of having the most singles reach the top 10(9 of them) without ever hitting #1. That’s all for this week. Below you’ll find links to my
