Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

I’ve been catching up on Cobra Kai on Netflix.  Naturally, this got me thinking about the original Karate Kid movies in the ‘80’s.  The first movie was released in 1984.  I was 5 years old.  Who would’ve thought that 38 years later, the Karate Kid would still be going strong? I recently finished reading Ralph Macchio’s book The Karate Kid and Me.  In it were a few Miyagi-isms, pearls of wisdom.  I figured I’d share a few from the book and online.

“Lesson not just karate only.  Lesson for whole life.  Whole life have balance.  Everything be better”.  Balance means understanding there will be stress.  There will be negativity.  There will be sadness but there will also be calm, positivity and joy.  Mr Miyagi’s most famous quote, however, is “first learn stand, then learn fly.  Nature rule, Daniel-san, not mine”.  Miyagi moto is “the best fight is when you don’t have to fight”.

Mr Miyagi’s first life lesson to Daniel came in the first film, when Daniel went to thank Mr Miyagi for fixing his bicycle.  Mr, Miyagi invited him inside to show him how to trim Bonsai trees, hoping to capitalize on his curiosity in order to boost his self-confidence.

“You trust the quality of what you know, not quantity”.  Daniel was constantly worried about not learning enough, but Mr. Miyagi was able to remind him that he needed to exercise patience.  It was more important for him to learn the philosophy behind the martial art, as opposed to how to simply punch and kick well.

“One-to-one problem, yes.  Five-to-one problem, too much to ask anyone”. If karate used defend honor, defend life, karate mean something.  If karate used defend plastic metal trophy, karate no mean nothing”.  (www.screenrant.com)

I figured I’d end this week with two very important lessons.  “It’s okay to lose to opponent.  Must not lose to fear”. Finally, “Man who work for passion always richer than man who work for money”.  Below are links for my podcast Blendertainment
