Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Companies change logos all the time.  I remember when ESPN2 began October 1, 1993.  I was a freshman in high school.  I remember thinking how cool it was that I was there for the birth of a network.  Sure, I was alive for the birth of MTV (’81), but I was 2.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t recall anything from 33 years ago.
ESPN2 began as a cooler, more up to date version of the flagship network.  It was billed as the alternative sports culture channel that was apparently run by everyone’s ideal, cool older brother.  All they aired was roller hockey games and other extreme, or as they called it X-treme, stuff.
I remember thinking how it was a little campy.  The music they played post-show was like some public access broadcast.  All things are rocky in the beginning, though.  They did have a neat logo, though.  Well, I thought so.  Fast-forward almost 21 years and ESPN 2 is still around.  They’ve gone main-stream, ditching the frat house style logo for the more corporate style, like ESPN.  They do still have the X Games; At least they don’t call them “X-treme Sports” anymore.
I recall when it started that I was a little wary of that new network.  Certainly if they hadn’t adapted to the more polished look they have today, it probably was going to get rough.  Everything is difficult in the beginning, though.  ESPN2 had to find their way, which they did.  I still like the cool first year logo, though.
