Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Dress for Success
This phrase is heard all the time.  It’s even been the title of a movie and a song.  But what does it mean to dress for success? It means that you don’t go for a job interview at a Fortune 500 company dressed in a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers.  In my opinion, you don’t go to ANY job interview in a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers.  Even if it’s a casual interview, lunch or whatever, at least wear a Polo shirt and kakis.
Also, unless you happen to be working from home, no shorts at work.  I didn’t make the rules.  I’m sure a lot of people at workplaces all over the world would love to wear shorts.  Why do you think some places of work have casual Friday’s?
If you’re in doubt as to how to dress for an interview, it’s best to err on the side of conservatism.  It’s much better to be overdressed than be underdressed(or undressed).  According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics, 55% of another person's perception of you is based on how you look. Her Dressing for Success information gives some tips on how to look your best, without necessarily spending a lot of money.
