Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Goodreads was founded in December 2006 and launched January 2007 by Otis Chandler and Elizabeth Khuri Chandler.  In December 2007, the site had 650,000 members and 10,000,000 books had been added.  By July 2012, the site reported 10 million members, 20 million monthly visits and thirty employees.  On March 28, 2013, Amazon announced its acquisition of Goodreads and by July 23, 2013, Goodreads announced their user database had grown to 20 million members.  By July 2019, the site had 90 million members.

You search for a book you’re reading in the Goodreads search bar.  You choose either “want to read”, currently reading”, or “read”.  “Want to read”, well that’s obviously a book you want to read, so it’s in your personal online que.  You choose “currently reading” for a book you’re reading now.  You choose “Read” when you’ve finished the book.

I’m currently 58% finished with David Baldacci’s latest book The 6:20 Man.  I could tell you what that title means but that would spoil one of the answers you’d get while reading the book, wouldn’t it? I have read a total of 197 books.  This will be 198.  I’d like to get to 200 by December 31 but I’m a slow reader.  I like to say I read for pleasure, therefore the speed I finish a book doesn’t matter.

I became a Goodreads member in 2014.  “Wait, you’ve been a member 7 years and you’ve only read 197 books”? Look, I read for pleasure.  The database started keeping track on October 22, 2014.  The book was The Inner Game of Music by Barry Green.  I gave it one star.  I was not a fan.  After you read the book, you can rate it 1-5 stars.  Below your rating is where the site keeps track of when you finished the book.  Below that is the date that you finished the book.  Below that is your review of the book.  You don’t have to write one but I usually have an opinion on the book I just read.

Goodreads is an American social cataloging website and a subsidiary of Amazon that allows individuals to search its database of books, annotations, quotes and reviews.  Users can sign up and register books to generate library catalogs and reading lists.  They can also create their own groups of book suggestions, surveys, polls, blogs and discussions.  The website’s offices are in San Francisco.

Thanks for reading and have a great Thanksgiving!
