Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

I was listening to Classic Vinyl on Sirius XM the other day and “Riders on the Storm” by the Doors came on. I immediately wondered how many songs either mentioned or had rain sounds in the song. As it turns out, there are a lot”. For one, I found a website called www.spinditty.com that had a list of songs that mention rain.

The first two songs I thought of immediately were “Thunder Rolls” as well as the song that spawned this idea, “Riders on the Storm”. This particular list had “Rain On Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande at #1. Clearly the list was curated by a millennial, or so I thought. They get major kudos for having “November Rain” by Guns & Roses at #4. As you can tell by now, I abandoned my “just songs with lightning sounds” credential. Thia would’ve been a short column.

What did irk me was their “honorable mention” that didn’t even make the list. This list included the Beatles’ “Good Day Sunshine”, “Over The Rainbow” by Judy Garland, Rather than name the entire list, I’ll hit the highlights. At 97 is “Beers and Sunshine” by Darius Rucker. At #95 is “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor. These next two are classics that I urge my younger readers to look up: #91; “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” by the Walker Brothers and “Sunshine” by Jonathan Edwards at 90. Just ahead is “It Will Rain” by Bruno Mars. We get country with “When It Rains it Pours” by Luke Combs at 87. Above it is “Mandolin Rain” by Bruce Hornsby. #83 takes us to the movies: “She’s Like The Wind” by Patrick Swayze from Dirty Dancing. 82 is “Lightnin’ Strikes” by Lou Christie. “Sunshine on my Shoulders”(John Denver), “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”(Elton John), “The Wind Cries Mary” by Jimi Hendrix at 77, Donovan’s “Sunshine Superman” at 76. Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls”, one of the songs I immediately thought of when this idea came about, is down at #59. Eddie Rabbit “I Love a Rainy Night” is at 57, one behind Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love”. Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind” is at 55. “Tornado” by Little Big Town” is just above it. “Rainy Days and Mondays” by the Carpenters is at 52. “Thunderstruck” by ACDC at #50. One above it is “Have You Ever Seen The Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival. “Purple Rain by Prince is at #46. “Crying In The Rain” by the Everly Brothers is at 40. One above is “Stormy” by Classics IV.

Bill Withers’ “Aint No Sunshine” is at #38. “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” by Stevie Wonder is at #35. 33. “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina & The Waves, 32 “It’s Raining Men” by the Weather Girls, the previously mentioned “Riders on the Storm” by the Dors is at #27. “Here Comes The Sun” by the Beatles is #25. I get those by Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” is higher then both at #23. I disagree. “Set Fire To The Rain” by Adele at #22. “Rock You Like a Hurricane” at 19. The Rolling Stones “She’s a Rainbow” comes in at #17. The next song I’ve heard of is at #7: “Dust In The Wind” by Kansas. At 6 is “Snow” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. 5 is “Cold” by Maroon 5 featuring Future. “November Rain” by Guns & Roses is in at #4. On top at #1 is “Rain On Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande.
