Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Oh, you didn’t know?

I was watching the end of the recent CMT Storytellers with Darius Rucker a few weeks ago.  Before the final song, Darius told the story that he didn’t want to record their biggest hit.  The rest of the band loved the song and he caved.  The song hit big at #1 and the band said “We told you so”.  He said “okay, I don’t know anything.  Y’all can pick from now on.  What was the song? “Only Wanna Be With You”.

After being included on the group’s EP Kootchypop, it was released July 18, 1995 as the third single from their breakthrough album Cracked Rear View.  It peaked at #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart, #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

There’s a verse that references Dylan’s hit “Tangled Up In Blue”.  According to Rucker, Dylan’s management were aware of the lyrics and had no problem with them.  However, when the song became a hit, they objected.  He told Rolling Stone “It never got to the point where we were sued…when we first did the song, we sent it to the publishing company, and everything was fine.  We played it for years and had a big hit with it.  Then they wanted some money, and they got it.  VH1 reported that Dylan received an out-of-court settlement in 1995 for $350,000.  Also mentioned in the bridge of the song is a reference “I’m such a baby cause the Dolphins make me cry”, alluding to Darius’ favorite sports team, the Miami Dolphins.  (www.wikipedia.com)
