Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Being a Christian in a Social Media Age-I could sum up this whole column in two words: it’s hard.  Why is it hard? Look at all the temptation in the world.  Social media brings takes it to a whole new echelon.  We all have opinions, so we’re all going to have opinions about what our friends or followers share.  The trick of it is to keep you in line, to not venture too far out in left field.
You run into a lot of people on Facebook and Twitter who aren’t Christians.  In fact, you’ve probably got a lot of friends who aren’t Christian.  That’s ok.  You can get wrapped up in the “war of words” on FB and Twitter about anything and everything.  I prefer not to partake in that.  I’m certainly not taking a “high and mighty” stance that some associate with Christians.  I’ve got news for you: anyone, regardless of faith or lack thereof, can be high and mighty.  You’ve got to guard against that.
I learned long ago to steer clear of certain websites such as topix.com.  In fact, I did a column on that several years ago.  As a Christian, I certainly wouldn’t go on that website.  I’ll be honest with you: I’ve greatly reduced/altered my Facebook participation these past few months.  I post but don’t get into heated discussions.  What’s the point? You have your “baiters”, who put things on there just hoping to get a bite.  I certainly don’t mess with those.
Facebook has a few Christian groups, I think.  I don’t do groups much, though.  I’m picky with my social networking.  You have to be that way.  If you’re a Christian and have an alternate online persona, what does that say about being a Christian?
To begin this column I summed up being a Christian in social media with two words: it’s hard.  I’d also add that it’s possible and be careful.  Put your blinders on, if you will.  Proceed with caution.
