Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

2021 is ending.  That means it’s time once again for the Big Dummy Awards! Inspired by Fred G. Sanford, played brilliantly by the late Redd Foxx, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal family rift, Chrissy Teigan and the cyber-bullying thing(and let’s not forget the few weeks where she wanted us to pronounce her last name differently).  She apologized but opened up about being part of the “cancel club”. There was Britney Spears’ conservatorship battle that seemed to span most of the year.  A judge relieved her of her 13-year court order in November.  Chris Harrison got fired from the Bachelor after a racist joke.  Same goes for Jeff Garlin, who got fired for telling a joke backstage.  There was Travis Scott’s Astroworld tragedy, where a crowd surge resulted in 10 dead and hundreds more injured.  Reminds me of the December 1979 Who concert where a rush at the gate resulted in the death of 11 people.  Not as much big dummy as tragedy. I’ll eliminate that from contention immediately.

More recently was Alec Baldwin’s onset tragedy.  Again, someone ended up dead so that’s not exactly the lightness I’m looking for.

Jeopardy has been on the air since 1984 and hasn’t had a scandal until the Cancel Culture 2021 tour.  The search to replace late host Alex Trebek led the show to hire executive producer Mike Richards, who was fired after something from his past was discovered.  Mayim Bailik and Ken Jennings are currently sharing hosting duties until a replacement is found.

Sharon Osbourne faced allegations of racism that led to her “deciding to leave” The Talk.  Fun year, wasn’t it?  So, our nominees are…

Meghan Markle-Prince Harry

Chrissy Tiegan

Britney Spears

Chris Harrison

Travis Scott

Alec Baldwin

Jeff Garlin

Everyone at Jeopardy

This is a tough call but after some deliberation, I’m going to do something a little unprecedented.  While there are a few that deserve the award-namely Chris Harrison because he hosts a terrible show, I’m going to give Big Dummy 2021 to cancel culture.  That’s right, an entire movement is getting the award.  Is that possible? Absolutely it is! Congratulations, cancel culture.  You have “won” my prestigious award for 2021.  Let’s face it, 4 of these nominees are on the list because of cancel culture. That said, Happy New Year!
