Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

That’s All, Folks-Awhile back, I began hearing rumblings that Psyche would be cancelled after this season, their 8th.  I’ve also heard rumblings that another USA show, White Collar, was on the verge of being cancelled.  Once those shows go away, I’ll have no other reason except for Monday nights to watch USA.
So just exactly what is the appeal of these shows? And why are they so short-lived? I think the appeal is different for every genre of show.  Each of these shows has humor mixed with drama, which is what makes for a great show.  Franklin & Bash is centered around law, but it’s certainly not your typical law show.  Just as White Collar isn’t your typical show about a criminal, Burn Notice wasn’t your typical spy show, etc.
The appeal for television shows, as is also true with books and movies, is that we the audiences tend to lose ourselves in the characters.  The mark of a good show, book, movie is that it holds our interest so much so that we don’t feel as though we’ve sat still for an hour or two.  Of course, with iPhones and tablets, we can get our shows on the go.  So, some aren’t technically sitting, as it were.  The other appeal, at least this seems to be the trend, is that these series’ have a short run.
One of the reasons I like Psych is their many catchphrases.  “Wait for iit”, “C’mon, son” are just a couple of the catchphrases that should by all rights be immortalized on t-shirts.  And there are countless numbers of bobble head dolls, etc. so they’ll be saying goodbye to not only their show, but the memorabilia and money they make from said items. This is true of every show.
As much as I get attached to some of these shows, I like the new “get in, get out” mentality.  We’re in a microwave society.  Short yet compelling stories are what audiences search for these days.  Nowadays, a show overstays its welcome if it goes eight years.  A show lasting ten years doesn’t come along very often.  Given that logic, Franklin & Bash may be nearing the end of their run, as popular as it seems now.  We do, indeed, live in a microwave society.
