Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Saturday, I got let in on a pre-birthday surprise.  My sister texted that she and my brother-in-law had procured tickets for the family to meet Leslie Jordan at The Groove, a record shop in east Nashville the following day.  I was stoked!

He would be signing copies of his album Company’s Comin’.  My sister made sure that a copy was reserved for each of us to be signed by Mr. Jordan.  If you haven’t heard his album, I recommend it.  It’s very good.  He has some heavy-hitters joining him on each song: on “This Little Light of Mine”, he duets with Katie Pruitt-who was at the signing as well.  “Where The Soul Never Dies” is one he duets on with Dolly Parton.  He sang “In The Sweet By and By” with T.J. Osbourne-they performed that one at the Opry the night before.  And I made sure to tell him I loved his Opry appearance and Call Me Kat.  I probably fanboy’d out but it’s fine.

He duets with Tanya Tucker on “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder.  He does “The One Who Hideth Me” with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.  You read that correctly.  I was surprised by that collab as well.  He does “Workin’ On a Building” with Ashley McBride and Charlie Worsham.  He, Charlie and Vince Gill performed that song on the Opry the previous evening.  He does “Farther Along” with Chris and Morgane Stapleton.

You may know Leslie from these other ventures.  He was on Will & Grace, The Cool Kids, Call Me Kat (which has been renewed) and countless other guest roles.  If you want to know those other guest roles as well as countless other stories, pick up his book called How Y’all Doing.

As my sister kept saying after we met him. He is just a delight.  He is the same in person as he is on tv.  This will be a birthday to remember! Plus, that record store is cool.  If you are ever in east Nashville, go check out The Groove at 1103 Calvin Avenue.  They ask that all customers wear a mask.

Naturally, the photographer in me had to snap some pics to commemorate the day.  And what a day it was!
