Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

You’ve Gotta See It Live-You know by now that I love going to concerts and ballgames.  This past Saturday January 11, I had the opportunity to see Kentucky/Vanderbilt at Memorial Coliseum in Nashville.  Before going to the game, we grabbed burgers at  Braiz Bistro, a local eatery next to the gym.  They also have some great fresh cut fries.  I highly recommend this place.  They do have more than burgers, by the way.

After eating our massive burgers on a pretzel bun, we moved to our cars.  We moved considerably slower leaving the restaurant than when entering.  We arrived at Memorial gym several minutes before the game was to begin.  The game was tight throughout, as is always the case with these two teams.  There’s just something about when these two mix it up in Nashville. Memorial Gym is certainly one of the toughest places to play in the Southeastern Conference.
This is not meant to be derogatory, but as I was walking the concourse on the way into the gym, the thought that crossed my mind was “this looks like a high school gym”.  I once took an Italian cooking class at the high school in Owensboro.  That’s what came to mind as I was walking Memorial Coliseum.
I’ve got to mention halftime.  We saw a performance from Russian Bar Trio.  They were on season three of America’s Got Talent. The group withdrew before the quarterfinals.  They were fantastic!
Kentucky got an all-important road SEC win 71-62 behind lead scoring from Wille Cauley-Stein and the Harrison twins.  There were some anxious moments, as we’d figured would take place.  What I came away with is this: I believe this team is starting to “get it”, and the time couldn’t be better.  Conference play, any conference, is full of excitement, but it’s also full of trap games.  We avoided a trap Saturday.  One thing that is certain: college basketball fans are in for some excitement in the next two and a half months.
Thanks to my sister and brother-in-law for my ticket.
