Remember when you were a kid and you’d hear songs on television commercials and think “what is that song”? What year could that possibly be from? It’s so embarrassing”.  Come on, we’ve all been there.  You hear a song on a commercial and your parents might start singing along.  You’re rolling your eyes as your parents sing.  Well guess what? I’m in the position that people might laugh at me.

“Low” by Flo Rida is in a Kroger commercial and it’s only 14 years old! “Whoomp! There It Is” is in the latest Geico commercial.  The parents start singing and dancing to the song and the kids are mortified.

The use of popular songs in American television advertisements began in earnest in 1985 when Burger King used the original recording of Aretha Franklin’s song “Freeway of Love” in a television advertisement for the restaurant.  (www.bing.com

Before you think there’s no way that songs from today could make their way into a commercial, just remember that the same was surely said of “Whoomp! There It Is”.
