Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Since Christmas was Wednesday, I figured I’d go over my favorite things of Christmas.  No, I won’t quote the lyrics of the Julie Andrews song “My Favorite Things”.  I turn on the Christmas music at about the beginning of December every year.  I do prefer the classics like “O Holy Night”, but I also like some contemporary stuff.  Straight No Chaser, who I saw perform at SKYPAC in November, has a great one called Christmas Cheer.  They also have a Christmas edition of their album “Under The Influence”.
I mentioned “O Holy Night”. One reason it’s my favorite is probably because it’s my grandmother’s favorite.  I do enjoy playing that one on acoustic guitar.  I usually save it until closer to Christmas.  I’ll play it at church either this Sunday or the next.  We’re singing “Good Christian Men Rejoice” in our cantata this year, so it’s a favorite.  “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” is another one of my favorites.  I played it this past Sunday.  It’s rather difficult because you really have to be on the ball-lots of chord change in that one.
Everyone has their favorite Christmas movies.  You have three camps, really.  There’s a group whose favorite is The Christmas Story.  There’s a group who love It’s A Wonderful Life.  And there’s still another group (and this is the group under which I fall), whose all-time favorite Christmas movie is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.  I have to watch it every year.  I have so many favorite lines and scenes.  I even have a few t-shirts with classic quotes from the movie on them.  I wore one to the Rochester Christmas party a week ago.
As far as my favorite Christmas snack? Peanut Butter Balls, peanut brittle, and the classic Christmas cookie are my top three.  I even have a favorite Christmas commercial.  It’s from the 1970’s, ’71 I believe.  It’s specific for WTVF out of Nashville.  Here it is for those who haven’t seen it or, like me, just can’t see it enough.

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!
