Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

I’ve shared with you movies I’ve been watching in quarantine.  I’ve shared apps and books that I’ve downloaded and am reading.  Today, I’ll talk about something else that is very beneficial in times like these: music.  Music is a huge part of life-especially mine.  We wake up to it(usually), we workout to it, we listen for leisure and we sometimes even go to sleep to music.

A few weeks ago, I made a Social Distancing Playlist that, so far, lasts 7 hours.  “Don’t Stand So Close To Me”  by the Police, “Cant Touch This” by MC Hammer, “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen, “Keep Your Hands To Yourself” by Georgia Satellites, “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins, “Keep Yourself Alive” by Queen are just a few I have on the list.  I’ve also got some non-illness titled songs.  I’ve got some Smokey Robinson: “I Second That Emotion”, “Tracks Of My Tears” and “Tears Of a Clown”.  The final song (so far) on the list is one I heard on Sirius yesterday: “Solitary Man” by Neil Diamond.  As a perfect representation of my musical tastes, this playlist is all over the place.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who has made a playlist like this.

I also like to play my own music.  I’ve already made two videos of me playing guitar.  I have this thing where I can’t listen to myself.  Why don’t we like the sound of our own voice?

Dr Silke Paulmann, a psychologist at the University of Essex, says, “I would speculate that the fact that we sound more high-pitched than what we think we should leads us to cringe as it doesn’t meet our internal expectations; our voice plays a massive role in forming our identity and I guess no one likes to realize that you’re not really who you think you are.”.  Dr Silke Paulmann, a psychologist at the University of Essex, says, “I would speculate that the fact that we sound more high-pitched than what we think we should leads us to cringe as it doesn’t meet our internal expectations; our voice plays a massive role in forming our identity and I guess no one likes to realize that you’re not really who you think you are.” www.theguardian.com

There you have a few music suggestions for this time of social distancing.  Everybody stay safe and keep your hands to yourself.  It’s not just a song anymore. Also, don’t stand so close to me.
