Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Thankful

With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, I’m seeing a lot of instances of people expressing their thankfulness.  This is something I believe we should always do.  I’m not one to make a pronouncement on Facebook that says “why don’t we be thankful all the time”.
I’m thankful for my salvation, family and friends, my job and a lot of other things I’ve been blessed with this past year.  I did take part in the Facebook “30 days of Thankfulness” last year.  It’s actually not as easy as it sounds. Sure, there are many things for which to be thankful.  It’s just the sitting down and listing things daily is difficult.  The song says “Count your blessings.  Name them one by one”.  It’s good to sit down and actually list your blessings, especially for me who tends to forget things.
Maybe that’s where the whole Facebook “30 Days” craze originates.  I’m a little eager, though.  I like to do it all at once.  I know, “that’s no fun” or “that’s not the rules”.  All that said, I do like the premise.  It shows that we are all thankful.  When you were little, you may have heard that you’re not grateful for what you have.  Even if that isn’t entirely true (although it’s true for some), the older you get, the more mature you get.
That’s one of the reasons I love this time of year.  It’s not just 30 days where thankfulness is spotlighted.  We go into the Christmas season in December and remain thankful for what we’ve been given.
Did you know there are Facebook pages dedicated to this?  One is called “30 Days Of Thankful” (2,853 likes as of 11-20).  The other is called 30 Day Thankfulness Challenge (1,021 likes as of 11-20).  It would seem that more people are thankful and have more things for which to be thankful than one might realize.
