Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

The importance of music should never be understated.  From accompaniment while you work, exercise or anything else, For me personally, I get more written.  I often run faster when a faster paced song comes on.

One thing you cannot listen to while running is a podcast.  You know from a past column that I do enjoy the occasional podcast.  Thing is, you have to concentrate while listening.  Concentration on one thing means reduced production on the other thing you’re doing.  I listened one day while running and found when I finished that my time was way off my usual.

Podcasts have increased in popularity since the success of Serial in 2014.  Research in 2013 suggested that more than 1/3 of all Americans listened to podcasts.  36% of those listened between 3-10 hours a week, with a further 12% listened to them 10 hours or more.  Podcasts don’t take the place of other media.  Rather, they add to it.

As I said in an above paragraph, running time can be greatly reduced if you listen to a podcast.  Say I average a distance of 3.40. If you’re listening to a podcast or slower music, you’re probably I’m probably lucky to hit 3 miles.

Different scenarios require different music.  I like country music.  I can tell you, however, you’re likely not going to get the greatest out of your workout while listening to country music.  Upbeat music is what I listen to for my run.  While I’m writing, I’ll listen to anything.  A few weeks ago, I turned out 12 pages while listening to my country playlist and some crooners.  I guess you could call that my productive music.

Music can also lift your mood.  Whether it’s playing or simply listening, I strongly recommend both.  Tuning into music can bring us a sense of happiness and a sense of belonging.  Go to a concert of an artist you enjoy.  It’s pretty cool, and good for you, to be around people who have similar tastes as you.  It’s good to have that camaraderie.  Music is going to make you feel better.  So, put your headphones on for an hour or so.  You might find it’s one of the best parts of your day.  I know I do.
