Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Fall is here! We say Spring has sprung.  Why not Fall has fallen? Maybe that’d be at the end of Fall.  Along with Fall comes cooler weather(eventually), seasonal Starbucks drinks-pumpkin spice all over! Fall brings football, basketball and the new television season.  Fall is the time of year that I’m definitely thankful for the Hopper DVR.  HULU is also very helpful whenever you have more favorite shows than pairs of eyes or time.

CBS is going to have a big hole to fill after this year.  This is the end of the line for the Big Bang Theory.  The show will wrap after 12 years.  There’s a report that Modern Family might follow suit.  This will be their 10th season.  There’s now talk of ending it after a shortened 11th season.  I was of the belief that Modern has been slowly going downhill the past couple of years.  Maybe that’s just me.

Since most people watch things On Demand now, the new season takes on lesser meaning.  The onset of Netflix, HULU and other streaming channels means you’re more likely to watch a full season in a weekend(if one wanted).  For instance, my sister told me last month that I needed to watch Trial and Error on NBC.  The second season had just ended six days earlier, my HULU subscription had lapsed and I didn’t have another card yet.  I bought the first season on Google Play for about $29.  I did get a new HULU card so I could watch the latest season.  If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it if you’re in the market for some good laughs. I watched the first 2 seasons in a week or two.

Back to network: I love that Bull and NCIS: New Orleans are back-albeit on separate nights now: Bull on Monday in place of the cancelled Scorpion, NCIS remains on Tuesday.  I’m wondering how that progresses now that Pride has been shot.  ABC is betting the farm on A Million Little Things.  I say that because I’ve seen about a million little commercials for that show in just a few months.

The reboots continue in the new season.  A rebooted Magnum P.I. premiered this week.  The original ran from ’80-’88. Murphy Brown returns this Thursday after being dormant 20 years.  The original ran from ’88-’98.

So many other premieres I’m looking forward to: Goldbergs, Blacklist(which we won’t get until January 2019), the final season of You’re The Worst(2019 on FXX), the final season of House of Cards(dropping November 2 on Netflix)-and I haven’t even talked about the latest Netfliz resurrection: Designated Survivor(cancelled by ABC last year).  Let the new season begin!
