Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain
This coming Saturday is kind of a big deal. It’s the fantasy football draft for The Five Families league and Team Mow Money. That’s the league I’m in as well as the team I own-well, virtually own. Last season, I made the league championship. So there’s nowhere to go but down, right? I kid. I hope. This year, I’m coming for the gold, brother! Seriously, we have a toy WWE Championship belt that goes to the league winner.
What makes a league draft so fun? And believe me, they are fun(if not a little nerve wracking-in a good way).
1)The research: I understand that research doesn’t sound like much fun. That’s not the case if the research is for something you enjoy. Keep in mind that you’re trying to get the best collection of players. Therefore, some research is imperative.
2)Anticipation: As you get closer to the big day where you say “I do” to your number one quarterback, Wide Receiver, Running Back, Defense and Kicker, the excitement builds to a fever pitch. You also anticipate the food that will be served. Don’t kid yourself: fantasy football draft day is much more than just sitting around with your laptops for a few hours-long draft. You’re going to work up an appetite for destruction(nod to Guns N Roses), or at the very least an appetite for nachos.
3)The camaraderie: One of the most fun parts of fantasy football leagues is who makes up the league. What’s better than getting together with family and friendsfor food and fun? Granted, sometimes friendly games can turn feverishly competitive. I’ve always heard there’s nothing wrong with a little friendly competition.
4)The moment has come. Your knee weak. Palms are sweaty. There’s vomit on your sweater already, mom’s spaghetti. Oh, I’m sorry, that’s an Eminem song. The palms sweaty part is real, though. Whether you’re waiting for the draft to start, waiting for your turn or hoping other drafters don’t choose the player you want. When it happens-and it happens frequently-you’re scrambling in short time to find a new player to draft. That is why you need to keep a rather long list of players of all positions next to you. That takes us back to why the research is so important.
If you’ve never been in a league but have had passing thoughts about it: I say join one. Win or lose, you’ll have a blast!
