Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Thursday night, September 12, a seven year journey comes to an end when the USA show Burn Notice airs its series finale.  Since the series premiere June 28, 2007, the one hour show has garnered a bit of a cult following, especially on Twitter.  #BurnNoticeAddiction(@SunnyODay) and @BurnNotice_USA are the two biggest accounts for the show.  In fact, @SunnyODay and I follow each other.  I once won a Burn Notice Twitter contest.  That’s another story.
I’ve always enjoyed movies, shows and books that center on spies, vigilante heroes and the like.  That’s why this show grabbed me from day one.  Michael Westin (played by Jeffrey Donovan) plays a burned spy.  Being black-listed basically means that you disappear: no credit cards, no record, etc.  The first three seasons were just Michael, Sam (Bruce Campbell), and Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar).  Season 4 saw new cast member Coby Bell, who played Jesse Porter, the spy Michael unintentionally burned.
Eventually Michael and the team earned Jesse’s trust, and he became a member of the team.  Yes, I’m pretty much a Burn Notice super-fan!  The series has seen some great villains.  This final season has seen a new villain, James Kendrick (played by John Pyper-Ferguson).  He’s the leader of the organization Michael has been assigned by the CIA to take down.  Michael’s been back in the game for a few years now.  This season, he’s had to endure a lot to prove himself to James.  Now deeply entrenched, we still don’t really have an idea as to how this will end Thursday night.
I’ve watched this show from the beginning.  Thank God for Tivo, because my bachelor’s classes in college met on Thursday nights back in ’08-’09.  Class ran from 6-10.  We’d usually get out a little early, about 9-9:930.  I would come in and unwind by watching the show.
How does it end? Will Michael finally be free? I did see one still photo from Thursday night and someone doesn’t make it.  We’ll just have to wait until Thursday to see who the victim is.  I’ll say this: As much as some have made fun of this show’s campy-ness, it’s had quite a loyal following.  Thanks to all the actors, producers and writers who’ve had a hand in this great show.  White Collar takes its timeslot in October.
