Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

This Thursday marks the beginning of the end of an error.  Oops, I mean era.  Six years, four of them on ABC, is pretty darn impressive for a tv show these days.  In a world where so many network shows get cancelled after one or two years, Nashville had kind of become the “that show still on”? You know, sort of like Blacklist is now.  And the View.  Not to say I’m throwing Blacklist in with the View.  That’s being entirely too harsh on Blacklist.  I digress.

Do you watch Nashville? Or did you leave the show when ABC cancelled it? I stuck it out.  I often ask myself why.  My only answer now is this: I’ve watched it this long.  Might as well see it through”.  That’s what I told my sister, anyway.  It’s an exercise in futility sometimes.  However, there’s a certain satisfaction you get from seeing a show from beginning to end.

I know a lot of people, present company included, didn’t really think Nashville would survive after Connie Britton left.  I mean, she was the star of the show.  They shifted as I figured they would need to, making Juliette as well as Rayna’s daughters the stars of the show.  Now, let’s jump into the truly weird.

They decided to delve into this cult angle I was immediately reminded of Boy Meets World.  Odd connection to make, right? Remember when Shaw got caught up with this guy Phillip Mack, played by Jerry Levine.  How do I remember that casting part? Don’t be too impressed: I googled it.  Granted, times have changed.  Nashville has been able to stretch this cult angle out and take it much farther; it appears they’ve locked Juliette in some type of dungeon room.  It’s all very Guiding Light.

As my sister and I were riding from Nashville to Bowling Green back in February during Mom’s hospital stay, Amy asked me what was going on with Nashville.  The lite conversation made for a much easier road trip and took our minds off the issue at hand, well as much as possible.

How does Nashville end? Will everybody live happily ever after? The cast has already said fans will be satisfied with the ending.  I can honestly see a situation where everybody rides off into the sunset, complete with some cheesy voice-over from a member, perhaps each member, of the cast.  Side-note: I’m a little surprised the cast isn’t hosting the CMT Awards Wednesday.  I bet they’re represented in some capacity.  I also wonder what’s next for each cast member.  Most are actually musically talented and have I think they’ll all be just fine.  Thanks for the ride, Nashville-as crazy as it’s often been.
