Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

I will enter the final year of my 30’s this Sunday.  In recent birthday’s, I’ve asked myself the question of “what have you accomplished this year”? It’s a natural thing for most.  Whether or not you’re supposed to do it I don’t know.  I suppose that’s up to the individual.

One of the most important attributes you gain as you get older is the ability to not give a… well, wait a minute.  Allow me to clean that up a little: not caring as much what everyone thinks and learning to listen to yourself.  There, that’s better.  First: if your gut is telling you something is wrong, well it’s wrong.  Your heart is an idiot.  Cold hard fact, isn’t it? Believe me, I’ve been through my share of noise(some of my own doing).  So, that’s one thing I’ve learned: if it’s stressing you out, making you mad, drop it like a bad habit (because that’s exactly what it is).

Honestly when you realize that fact, your life is going to get better.  Another thing: you do you.  You hear that all the time and might ask yourself what that means.  It basically means to do your own thing.  It’s like that Montgomery Gentry 2004 song “You Do Your Thing”.

As far as the question of what I’ve accomplished: I’m writing a book.  So when I’m sitting in a chair feverishly typing on my laptop and I’m asked “What are you, writing a book over there”? I can say “yes I am.  A book is enough, right? I mean, it takes up a lot of time.  I’ve been hesitant to tell anyone but my best friend because, other than the fact I tell her everything-we’re both writers.  We get it.  Well, a few others know but not many.

What is my goal for year #39? I’d like to get that first book out there.  I know, sometimes it takes several years to write a book.  But hey, I’m well on my way.  Also, spoiler alert: I’ve already got a few more ideas.  I think I like this book writing thing.  I think I’ll like 39, too.  Might want to ask me again the next time I pull a muscle.
