Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

The network television shakeup is always intriguing.  Some personal favorites get cancelled(I’ll get to that), some shows you think won’t get renewed get renewed, and ones you think “how is that still on the air”, are coming back and have, in fact, been around a half decade. I’ll start with the cancelled shockers.

CBS cancelled Superior Donuts after two seasons.  Okay, that wasn’t a huge shock.  Networks have an itchy trigger finger.  Shows don’t get years to find their groove as was the case in the past.  Kevin Can Wait has been cancelled after two seasons.  Again, I’m not surprised.  When they fired the former wife on the show and brought in Leah Remini….well, this isn’t King of Queens era anymore, CBS.

Scorpion has been cancelled after four seasons.  This one took me aback.  I’ve watched that show since season one(maybe two, I don’t remember).  They drew up an interesting dichotomy in what is now the series finale.  Team Scorpion had splintered into two groups after a team argument: the other being Scorpion 2.0, the new and improved Scorpion.  Apparently CBS saw it as a weak premise to build on.  That and increasingly low ratings did it in.

Quantico has been cancelled after three seasons.  I didn’t watch it but I thought ABC would be able to keep it going.  Alex, Inc. has been cancelled by ABC after one season.  The other surprise to me was this one: Designated Survivor has been cancelled after two seasons.  Fox cancelled Last Man On Earth after four seasons.  This didn’t really surprise me.  I started out liking the show but this season was not good.

HULU cancelled The Path after three seasons.  I never watched it.  HULU’s Shut Eye has been cancelled after two seasons.  I watched the first season.  That was plenty.  Fuller House has been renewed for season four.  To me, this isn’t a surprise.  It’s a good show.  Nashville is ending after season 6.  I could do a whole column on how insane that show has gotten.  That may come later.

Scorpion was the only Monday show I watched: gone.  Bull, NCIS: New Orleans survived.  IFC’s Brockmire starring Hank Azaria has been renewed for the next two seasons.  It’s funny.  Check it out if you haven’t seen it.  As is, t looks like I’ll be able to clear a lot of DVR space this fall.
