Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Why do your favorite stores always change their placement? I can almost guarantee that your favorite products aren’t in the same place as the last time you visited the store.  I can be sent to look for a certain product, and it’s honestly like a scavenger hunt.  I’m going down this aisle and that aisle.  I’m looking left and right.  All the while, the dye that I’m certain they put in the air is messing with my eyes.
The reason that stores do this is that, the more you walk the aisles, the more stuff you are more apt to pick up on the fly.   Maybe you don’t need those Reese’s Fast Break bars, but they were on your way to the milk.  Reese’s is milk chocolate.  Milk is in the name. Why not buy a few bars? And that’s the type of thinking Wal-Mart hopes that you’ll employ.
Are you an impressionable buyer? Forget it! Constant change in placement will get you every time.  You’d be better off to stroll through the stores blindfolded.  Do not walk the stores blindfolded.  That was simply an example.
My biggest beef with product placement, as I mentioned above, is the dye they put in the air messing with my eyes.  I do, however, feel a bit of a personal victory when I’ve located an item after walking nearly the entire store.  You just want to scream “I FOUND IT”!
Surely I’m not the only one who’s noticed this while walking through a store.  My aunt is actually the one who brought up the idea of making this into a column.  Thing is, there’s not anything we can do about a store’s placement.  Sure, we can complain to our checker that something was hard to find.  But that’s basically just for the benefit of airing it out to someone.  Plus, the scavenger hunt brings those personal victories when you finally find a product.  That’s good, right?
