Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

This Friday marks a monumental occasion,  at least for me: Murdoc vs Murdoc.    I’m an avid viewer of the MacGyver reboot just as I was a MacGyver super-fan the first time around.  I liked how he resolved his conundrums.  He didn’t use guns.  In fact, he had as much a distaste for guns as he did snakes.  He used his ingenuity.  What captivated me most, though, is the character that would become my favorite villain of all time: Murdoc.

Michael Des Barres played Murdoc perfectly.  Murdoc first appeared in season two, For fellow fans who recall, Murdoc was an assassin working for the Homicide International Trust aka HIT, an international group of assassins.  Murdoc appeared in a total of nine episodes being the most frequent antagonist of the series and one of the very few to actually make recurring appearances. His final appearance in the original series was in the 7th and final season in an episode called Obsessed.  In the remainder of the series, Murdoc appeared in one episode per season.  Those episodes were always my favorite.  I implore you to get on HULU(or get an account if you don’t have one), and watch that show.  If you just want to have a Murdoc-a-thon, here are the episodes in which he appears:

Season 2: Partners.  Season 3: The Widowmaker.  Season 4: Cleo Rocks.  Season 5: Hollywood Knights.  Season 6: Strictly Business and season 7: Obsessed.  He does appear in flashback form in season 4’s Unfinished Business, season 5’ s Serenity and season 6’s Hindsight.

Fast-forward some 25 years.  A brand new generation is discovering Mac via this new reboot.  This Murdoc, played by the brilliantly creepy David Dastmalchian.  You may recognize David from a recent 12 Monkeys arc or as a Joker stooge in The Dark Knight.  David’s first appearance was in November 2016.  This Friday, he’s back with a twist.  His handler, his teacher, the “O.G.” Michael Des Barres, MDB, The Marquee-if you listen to his Sirius radio show on Little Steven’s Underground Garage(which I highly recommend you do-it’s a great show), you know that’s the intro to his show every day.

As a massive fan, I almost came unglued when the showed the preview two weeks ago that the OG was back!  I’ll be right there in front of my TV this Friday night at 7 on CBS to watch Murdoc vs Murdoc.  I’m even going to fire up HULU and watch some of the originals.  Can you tell that I’m excited? Ha!

To borrow a line from David Dastmalchian. “how twisted can this game get?” How twisted, indeed!?
