Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

My favorite things in winter are basketball and football.  With all this snow, I’m seeing a lot of snow pictures on Instagram.  Lots of people playing in the snow, mostly kids.  I’m more of the college basketball and NFL viewer in the winter.

A few years ago, I added another arrow to my winter quiver: Netflix.  Who doesn’t love Netflix? I love comedies and comedy specials by my favorite comedians.  Two weekends ago, I watched all of Dave Chappelle’s Netflix specials.  I still need to watch Jerry Seinfeld’s special.  I have quite a lot of titles in my que.  I never saw The Founder with Michael Keaton playing Ray Croc, a salesman who turned two brothers’ fast food eatery into McDonalds.

My two favorite shows on Netflix are House of Cards and The Ranch.  I still haven’t watched the previous(and likely final) season of House of Cards.  I just finished The Ranch.  If you’ve not seen it yet, I won’t spoil it.  I will say, however, that I’m curious as to how they’ll write Rooster(Danny Masterson) off the show.    That’s no spoiler.  Anyone who follows the news knows of the Masterson situation.  I could say the same about Kevin Spacey and House of Cards.  Do you replace the characters?  We know that when shows replace title characters, that’s usually the beginning of the end(Two and a Half Men, for example).  Ironically enough, Ashton replaced Charlie Sheen.

When I finish a show, I’m left wondering what I’ll binge next.  I’ve still got some to watch.  I watched the first season of the Hulu show Shut Eye.  If you’re not familiar, it stars Jeffrey Donovan(Burn Notice, JFK) as Charlie Haverford.  His life is basically being controlled by bad guy Fonzo.  Charlie sustains a head injury that basically gives him fake psychic powers.  Think Psych but a drama instead of a comedy.

I also like Fuller House on Netflix.  Having been a fan of the original, I decided to give this one a go.  Again, I haven’t yet watched the current season.  So, it would appear I have three shows to watch across Netflix and HULU.

Since the NFL season is basically over and Kentucky basketball is lackluster in enthusiasm this season. I say pull up Netflix and binge.  It’ll make winter go by a little faster.
