Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Reboots are all the rage these days.  Some work, some don’t.  Last week, Roseanne returned.  Same cast, minus David played by Johnny Galecki.  Obviously he’s on the glactic hit Big Bang Theory.  Roseanne and Dan(that’s right, he didn’t really die) are the grandparents now.  They house Darlene and her daughter as well as Becky.  Did I mention Roseanne is a Republican? Baffles me that ABC brought the show back knowing that.  Darlene’s son is gender neutral.  The show deals with post-election family fallout(Jackie’s a Democrat).  I did watch the first edition.  This one might be better.

The Full House reboot that’s not really a reboot has also seen a lot of success, this time for Netflix.  Will & Grace got a reboot for NBC.  MacGyver is ending up season 2 of their reboot.  There will be a season 3 I believe.  The Hawaii Five-0 reboot is going well.  I’m always wondering which reboot is next.  From what I saw on GMA earlier this week, could we be in for another Dallas reboot? They had the remaining living cast on the morning of April 2.  That day was the 40th anniversary of the series premiere.  That’s right, the show is one year older than me.  There was a reboot on TNT but I think everyone would rather remember the original.  In fact, now I want to go back and watch it.  I never saw the series premiere, obviously.  I can only imagine how hokey it might appear these days.

Movie reboots are just as iffy, if not more so.  The Rocky reboot which, again, wasn’t really a reboot, was a surprise success.  I never saw Creed but always wanted to.  My problem is sitting down for two hours at home to watch a movie.  It was such a success that Creed 2 will be released November 21 of this year.  Hey, it’s on Hulu. Maybe I’ll get around to it before November.

Some reboots don’t just not work.  They fail badly.  Off the top of my head is the Karate Kid reboot with Will Smith’s brat, I mean son, Jaden.  I never saw the movie because I didn’t want to taint my memory of Daniel-san and Mr. Miyagi.  Turns out I wasn’t the only one who held that thought.  Lots of other people didn’t see it, either.  That just goes to show that for every Creed there’s a New Karate Kid, for every Roseanne a Dallas.  That’s why remakes are tricky business.  As a certain iconic television character once said, “I love it when a plan comes together”.
