Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

If you have a twitter account, there are several things that get you excited that others may find silly. Obtaining followers would be a crazy sounding scenario in any other situation.  What about when a famous person follows you? I have a CMT hostess following my account (Top 20 hostess Alecia Davis).  Fox 17’s Kelly Sutton follows my account, as well as country singers Danielle Peck and  Susie Brown of the Jane Deer Girls. When I got the email notifications of those followers, I got excited.  I think it’s pretty cool.  The question is: why do we get so excited when someone famous follows us?
I think that somewhere in our subconscious, we feel that we’ve done something for these people to follow us.  As if we feel extra special or part of the “in crowd”.  Truth is, people are people.  Whether they’re on television, in movies, or anything else, we’re all the same once you strip us of our job titles.  Heck, that’s the case even with any title we happen to hold.
It’s as if something in our brain screams, “I’m important”! Well, of course you are.  Everyone is important.  I posed the question to my Facebook friends.  My friend Sheena says “I think it’s because a celebrity recognizes us, noticed our page and “follows us”.  I prefer to think that the artist appreciates their real fans.  After some “twitter conversation” between the two of you, which usually consists of several tweets, bantered about, the artist decides you’re cool enough to follow.  That’s a decent theory, don’t you think?
