Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Food is essential.  You’ve got to eat Why not make it good food? Two of my favorite foods are pizza and barbeque.  If you’d like to combine the two, well I’ll delve into that later.  I wrote last week of my St. Louis trip.  Today I’ll expound on all the food we ate on the trip.
When we arrived in St. Louis Monday afternoon, we decided to see the sights, including the Arch.  Coincidentally, we did never ate at the Golden Arches.  We decided to walk the short distance to Sugarfire Smokehouse on Olive Boulevard.  Allow me to set the scene.
They serve American barbeque reasonably priced.  Menu favorites are: 4 0z pulled pork serving, 6 oz pulled pork serving, Big Muddy(brisket) and a half rack of baby back ribs.  All had a choice of sides.  The portions are not dainty, either.  When getting food in STL, come prepared to eat and eat BIG! Seriously, you’ll be waddling out of every restaurant.
I ordered the 4 ounce sandwich with mac and cheese.  Most times, my sister looks at my plate when I don’t order vegetables and sings the line from Coldplay, “they were all yellow”.  It’s humorous.  I felt rather defeated afterwards until I realized that it’s virtually impossible for a person to eat every bit of those massive portions.  This wouldn’t be the first time I faced this dilemma.
I ate nachos at the ballpark.  Again, massive portions.  Everyone else in my party shared.  I had my own boat of cheesy nacho goodness.  If I were to give a percentage, I’d say I took care of about 80%.  That’s good, considering.  Our final morning in St Louis, we had breakfast at a local place where I had a massive breakfast burrito.  Did I mention every portion of food was insanely large? If you go away hungry, it’s your own fault.
Another great place for barbeque, and a lot closer, is Jack’s in Nashville.  When they say it’s a little hole in the wall place, they aren’t kidding! But the ‘cue is fantastic.  Memphis barbeque is where it’s at! Have you picked up on the fact that I’m a barbeque connoisseur? In fact, if you want a little taste of Memphis or Kansas City BBQ right here, go buy some Heinz Memphis or KC sauce.
How could I forget about my other favorite food: pizza?! St Louis has a little pizza spot called Imo’s that’s pretty good for a post-game snack after a Cardinals game.  We stopped there the last time we were in STL.  I think we were more thirsty than hungry.  Don’t get me wrong, we polished off the pizza but we sucked down our Cokes pretty quickly.
Oh, as far as my BBQ pizza promise from earlier goes? Lean Cuisine BBQ pizza is the way to go.  There you have it: my summer eating suggestions.  I encourage you to stop at these places anytime, actually.
