Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Just when you thought/prayed it was over, ABC announced Wednesday that the network would bring back American Idol.  Idol, as you know, was originally on FOX from 2002-2016.  The show went from “ooh, this is great! Have you heard Kelly Clarkson’s voice? No wonder she won” to “Trent Harmon won.  Who’s he”? By the way, we still don’t know the answer to that not-so-burning question.

Who will host? Who will judge? Who will watch? Seriously, are we not tired of the singing competitions? I’ve even soured on the Voice.  I’m really not sure why they’re doing this.  Idol’s ratings, especially towards the end, plummeted. What it is, I think, is ABC getting caught up in reboot-mania: CBS with MacGyver, NBC with Will & Grace, ABC with Roseanne and now American Idol.  All of this brings back a few thoughts.  If this is all for nostalgia sake, that’s fine.  If ABC really thinks they’re going to find more stars, they must be dreaming.  Do they not remember their dud called Greatest Hits? Granted, that was more for nostalgia purpose so it only lasted a year.  I honestly think that might be what this is.

There were some tweets Tuesday morning that pretty much expressed my feelings on the matter, including: @AbbyAlmomar who posted “I feel like they should leave American Idol in the early 2000’s”or @eelia21 who posted a pic with the simple caption of “y tho”.  @tayxivana posted “literally no one asked for an American Idol reboot”.  @IamSouthern_eh posted “I see Disney is using all their layoff money to bring back American Idol”.  This could be my favorite, from @JimmySquid20: not sure what’s worse: the pain my body is in from going to the gym studying for finals, or finding out that American Idol is returning.  Here’s what I think is the final toll on why this shouldn’t happen: track record.  During Idol’s run, only Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood were the winners who are still making hits.  Runner-ups Jennifer Hudson(Oscar winner), Clay Aiken(for a minute), and Chris Daughtry have made splashes.  As far as the other 12 winners…..*crickets*.  I would like to see who ABC parades out to be the host and judges for what I can only imagine will be a one-off nostalgia run.  I could be wrong but I doubt it.
