Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Andy Sullivan

There is a group taking Facebook by storm.  Bryan Locke started the group called you Know You’re From Morgantown, KY if you remember… However, the group is not limited to memories of Morgantown.  I messaged Bryan and got some great information.

Bryan said the group started late Tuesday (the 9th).  “I believe, in less than 48 hours, the group had 1,000 members”. He continues, “I just believe that one of the best things that our culture has going for us is its appreciation for oral history.  We all come from a great line of storytellers and I believe social media can be utilized to re-capture the opportunity to communicate our history, upbringing, memories, community spirit and pride.  Everyone who belongs to this page has an “ah” moment, I believe.  An opportunity to see history not only in someone else’s eyes but to sharpen their own memories so that they may be better told to the next generation”.

Bryan continues, “ It’s important to me personally to help spread the word that we are so privileged to live in such a rich, vibrant community such as Morgantown and even though we may have fallen on hard times, our forbearers never gave up never gave up on it, and neither should we! Good communication is just one more tool we can use to pull ourselves up and progress to the next level.”

I asked around for comment on the group.  Brent Phelps told me, “Quincy Akin asked me to join and I did.  It has brought back a flood of memories of how a small town used to be and how it should (remain).”  Darren Parrish adds, “I find it fascinating and wonderful how so many people could be connected by simply relaying a building, person or event.  Butler County residents, past and present, should be proud of such a heritage.  Morgantown and its surrounding communities will always be a part of us.  Nothing can take it from us.”

I joined a day or two after the group was created, and there were already quite a few members.  Membership is free and grows by the minute.  As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 16th, there were 1,500 members.  My first post when I joined was about Druthers.  I even found some logos of mascot Andy Dandytale and shared.
