Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

This week, I’ll tackle the question of “what time of day are you happiest and/or most productive?” I got several responses.  Most response were, as expected, in the morning.  Some may say “I’m not a morning person”.  Or maybe, as I am, “I’m a night-owl”.  On average, people are more productive in the morning.
I got more people telling me that morning is their most productive time.  Some reasoned that it was because that was their work shift, so they were basically conditioned to be such.  The one who said night said so because they worked the night shift.  Truthfully, though, everybody has different times of day when they feel most productive.
There are, of course, ways to spike your energy in those less-productive times of day.  You can exercise in the middle of the day for an afternoon energy boost.  You can learn to be a more productive night-owl.  Voltaire, one of humanities great minds, was a night owl.  If you break from your normal sleep pattern, even if just an hour, you could pay the price; sleepless nights, late night overeating, etc.
When I was a kid, I was a morning person out of necessity.  Elementary school did not meet at night.  Summertime, I got to watch the Tonight Show and things like that(these were the pre-Netflix days, kids).  Summertime and weekends would make me a night person in later years.  Did my productivity suffer? How many kids are productive in the summertime, anyway?
Time is relative.  Happiness is a state of mind.  If you want to be happy in the morning, set your mind to being happy in the morning.  It is possible to change course if you want.
