Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Monday, another music legend was lost when Eagles’ founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey passed away at 67 years of age from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcer ulcerative colitis and pneumonia while recovering from intestinal surgery. During the ‘70’s, Frey played guitar, piano and keyboards.  Alongside Don Henley, Frey was one of the primary singers of the Eagles.  He sang lead vocals on “Take It Easy”, “Peaceful Easy Feeling”, “Tequila Sunrise”, “Already Gone”, “Lyin’ Eyes”, “New Kid in Town” and “Heartache Tonight”.
After the Eagles broke up(the first time) in 1980, Frey embarked on a solo career.  He released his debut album, No Fun Aloud, in 1982 and went on to record Top 40 hits “The One You Love”, “Smugglers Blues”(still my Miami Vice jam), “Sexy Girl”, “The Heat is On”(from Beverly Hills Cop II), “You Belong to the City”(also heard on Miami Vice), “True Love”, “soul Searchin’ and “Livin’ Right”.
He guest starred in the Miami Vice episode “Smugglers Blues”, hence the song for the episode.  He starred in South of Sunset(cancelled after one episode).  In the late ‘90’s, he guest-starred on Nash Bridges as a policeman whose teenage daughter had run amok and gone on a crime-spree with her sociopath boyfriend.  Frey starred in the movie Let’s Get Harry in 1986.  He had a small role in Cameron Crowe’s third film, Jerry Maguire.  Frey played the frugal general manager of the Arizona Cardinals who, in the films climax, finally agrees to pay Cuba Gooding, Jr’s character Rod Tidwell a large professional contract.
Frey was married twice: ’83-’88 to Janie Beggs and Cindy Millican in 1990.  They had three children: daughter Taylor and sons Deacon and Otis.
Soon after hearing the news of Frey’s passing, I bought their 1994 reunion album Hell Freezes over on iTunes.  I also have an Eagles Spotify playlist of all of their biggest hits and some solo work from Frey and Don Henley.
R.I.P Glenn Frey.
