Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

The big sports news recently is that Pete Rose will, once again, not be allowed to be on the Hall of Fame ballet, re-instated, or allowed to have anything to do with baseball as far as holding a job.  He will, I assume, still have his position as FOX analyst during baseball season.  As you might suggest, I’ve got a problem with this whole deal.
My problem is not that he is a FOX analyst.  He definitely should be on television talking baseball.  I don’t even think my biggest problem is that he hasn’t been reinstated.  Well, before the big steroid bust I didn’t have an issue.  You’ve got Mark Mcguire and Sammy Sossa, who had us all caught up in their “feel-good” home-run race.  Guess what? Steroids.  Were they banned? Let me see.  No, they were not.  Derek Jeter.  This cat is about as sleazy, filthy as they come.  Is he banned? Nope.  It’s all good in the hood with Jeets.
Of course, the Dan Patrick Show was saturated with this topic Tuesday.  One caller from Florida said Whitey Herzog once told him(not sure how he got to talk to Whitey Herzog, but anyway) “there’s one rule in baseball: don’t bet on baseball.  You can do anything else you want but don’t bet on baseball”.  Clearly you can do anything else you want.  As I alluded to, look at these other guys.
Pete Rose retired as a player when I was seven years old.  As infield and outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds, Pete was pretty much the man for his 23 year career.  With a batting average of .303, 160 home runs and 4,256 hits, 17 times an All-Star, a 3 time World Series Champion, and winner of numerous awards, how do you not put this guy in the Hall? But much like the words on the meme of Kermit drinking tea says “but that’s none of my business”.
Quick summary: Pete’s not getting in the Hall of Fame and probably never will.  That’s really unfortunate.  Of course you have people who say “he cheated.  He should never be in”.  Refer back to what I wrote a few paragraphs back.  I’m not sure how you defend keeping these other guys in and keeping Pete out.  I think Fay Vincent(the commissioner that originally banned Rose) gets to all these other commissioners.  He was only commissioner 3 years so this is probably preserving the only noteworthy thing he ever did. Let’s face it: if there was ever one commissioner that lifted the ban, said commissioner would probably be removed from office and blacklisted.  Am I wrong? Final word: the fix is in.
