Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language, Second College Edition, defines Thanksgiving as “ a formal, often public thanks to God in form of prayer; an annual U.S. holiday observed on the 4th Thursday in November.  It commemorates the Pilgrim’s celebration of the good harvest in 1621.
This time of year is filled with food, family, friends and various get-togethers in which you remember as well as make memories.  Of course, there is football.  Dolphins/Cowboys on CBS at 3, Packers/Lions on FOX at 11:30 and 49ers/Ravens 7:00 on NFL Network are the games of the day.  If you’re part of an NFL fantasy league, like me, don’t forget to set your line-up before Thursday morning.
Thanksgiving Day, for me, consists of getting up to, most likely, the smell of meal preparation.  I eat breakfast, usually something lite such as cereal so as to not fill up before the big meal.  I usually watch some early football until the Thanksgiving meal, which is usually about noon for our family.  After the food is set on the table and I say grace over the meal, we eat.  Well, to put it more bluntly, we stuff ourselves.
Turkey, dressing, corn, green beans, five-cup salad, and more make up the meal usually.  I’m getting hungry just mentioning it! After eating, it’s back to football.  We all feel considerably more miserable than we did before.  It’s interesting that we eat lots more on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year, or at least I do.
That’s pretty much the Sullivan Thanksgiving.  There will be one less at the table this year (we’ll miss Cousin Paul since he passed on).  Each passing makes us appreciate who we have around us even more.
Enjoy the food, fun and football.  Most of all, however, enjoy family. Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving and thanks, as always, for reading.
